Why Great Danes Are The Best Dogs? [5 Reasons, From A Great Dane Mom]

Everybody thinks their dog is the best, and no one is wrong.

But what makes a dog great isn’t how they look. Or even how they behave, necessarily.

It’s that magical little “spark” of a bond you share with your four-legged best friend… something nobody else has.

Written by Jen, proud owner of a 3-year-old Great Dane/Poodle mix named Luna, who is her once in a lifetime “heart dog.”

Jen specializes in the care and training of large dog breeds. She particularly enjoys working with Great Danes (for their big, goofy natures) and Poodles (for their intelligence).

That being said, we all have our preferences when it comes to dog breeds.

Myself, I like Great Danes.

So, allow me to convince you! Here are 5 reasons why Great Danes are the best dogs.

Is that a dog or a horse? Great Danes are huge!

Be honest. You probably once dreamed of owning a horse, right?

Well, with a Great Dane, that far-off fantasy comes pretty darn close to reality!

Great Danes weigh in at 110+ lbs for females to 140+ lbs for males. That makes them literally the same weight as a miniature pony.

I can assure you, there is nothing quite like walking a Great Dane around the neighborhood.

Cars will literally stop to say hello.

People will come out of their houses and ask to pet your jumbo pup.

Teaching others how gentle these giants are is one of my favorite reasons why I believe Great Danes make the best dogs.

Excellent with children

Next, Great Danes are wonderful with kids. These dogs are tolerant of little hands, patient, make watchful nannies, and don’t have an aggressive bone in their bodies.

However, it’s important to never leave children alone with a Great Dane, if only because their massive paws might accidentally step on a crawling toddler!

Great Dane Care recommends teaching them as puppies to be extra careful around children.

Great Danes give the ultimate snuggles

With a Great Dane, no furniture is off limits.

That’s because a) they adore soft pillows and blankets and b) even if you set ground rules about not jumping onto the bed, a Great Dane is large enough to easily ignore them.

But truth be told, you’ll likely want to cuddle up with your Great Dane anyways.

Those gigantic bodies give the best snuggles! They’re furry, warm, and oh so sweet.

Shorthair means less vacuuming and quick groomer visits

Let’s get practical for a moment.

Another key reason why Great Danes are the best dogs has to do with their minimal grooming requirements.

Unlike longhaired breed (such as say, a Husky) Great Danes don’t shed too much.

A weekly brushing and monthly bath will suffice.

Plus, they don’t require fancy haircuts.

This saves owners money, so we have more room in the budget to spend on other things… like treats and toys to spoil our Great Dane.

You will never be lonely with a Great Dane

Lastly, Great Danes make the best dogs because they will love you unconditionally.

Since getting Luna (my Great Dane mix) I have never felt lonely for one second.

Mostly because she follows me everywhere!

Great Danes are affectionate. They thrive on human company. According to the American Kennel Club, this breed is also extremely eager to please.

Therefore, they make wonderful pets for single people and families alike.

And there you have it. 5 reasons why Great Danes are the best dogs around, from the perspective of a Great Dane mom.
