Dog crates are an excellent tool for several things, but many owners feel badly about the hard bottom and the overall cold feel of a plastic, metal or wire kennel.
That’s completely understandable and these same owners find themselves wondering if they should keep a cozy bed in their dog’s crate.
The answer really depends on the individual pet, but let’s get more into the subject of keeping a bed in your dog’s crate.

Do Crates Need Dog Beds?
Ultimately, no, your dog doesn’t HAVE to have a bed in their crate in order for the environment to be safe and functional.
But, you are more than welcome to include one in your dog’s crate, especially as they age or suffer from hip dysplasia and require a little more cushion for their joints.
Can You Put A Dog Bed In A Crate?
You certainly are welcome to put a bed inside your dog’s crate.
Your geriatric doggo will benefit greatly from the padding and cushion that a dog bed has to offer, as they can be prone to sores and calluses on their elbows and other joints from the way they lay down.
A dog that suffers from orthopedic pain or injury will also benefit from the cushion that a bed provides.
Pet’s that have arthritis or any orthopedic issues will see the most benefit from having a bed in their crate.

When Should You Avoid Putting A Dog Bed In A Crate?
When you are working on potty and crate training a puppy, it is always best to avoid putting too much in their kennel.
This is especially true if the dog is struggling with potty training as they are more likely to have accidents on the bed, meaning you’re going to be washing it A LOT.
Not only do puppies like to soil their nice, new beds, but they are also teething little monsters sometimes.
That’s right!
That 200$ bed you just bought could end up shredded in only a few hours if it’s left in the crate with a puppy.
Is Having A Dog Bed In Their Crate Better For Them?
Having a comfortable bed to sleep on in their crate will make them more likely to sleep and want to stay in their crate.
However, that’s not the case for all dogs.
Many would prefer to crash on the couch (see tips for avoiding that) or snuggle up with you under the covers.
If you have a dog that is still unsure about sleeping or staying in a crate, providing them with some comfortable bedding can make it a more pleasant experience.
Conclusion: Should Dog Crates Have Beds?
Dog beds can absolutely have a place inside their crate.
However, it’s important that we know if our dog can be trusted to not destroy said bed right away.
If you have a big time chewer, then it may be best to skip having any bed or blankets in their crate.
