3 FAQ’s About Small Dog Carriers
How do I find a carrier that is the right size for my dog?
The best thing to do is to know the measurements and weight of your dog. You will want to measure from the tip of their nose to the tail in order to get the most accurate idea of what size carrier you will need.
Check the measurements of the carrier, you will want your dog to fit inside with the ability to turn around easily, that means at least 2-4 inches of room on all four sides.
Also, ensure that your pet’s weight is appropriate for the carrier’s recommendations and dimensions.
What kind of carrier should I get?
The type of carrier that you purchase should be appropriate for your uses.
For instance:
If you are looking for a carrier to take with you on walks, public transportation or cycling, you will want to find an option that is comfortable for both of you while also bringing you a hands free option.
Backpack carriers
… (like the Kurgo dog backpack) are best suited for a busy and active lifestyle with your small dog.

When owners need a hands free option to take care of things around the house or they are going on a shopping trip, using a papoose style carrier can be great.

Sling dog carriers (papoose)
…are a wonderful and maternal feeling way of carrying around your dog. Many dogs find it soothing and often fall asleep.
How do I get my dog used to the carrier or sling?
Sometimes acclimating to change, like riding in a carrier or put inside a backpack or sling can take some getting used to.
In order to desensitize your pet to the idea of being in one of these strange carriers can take some time, but here is my advice.
- Keep the carrier out in the open while at home. Basically get the dog used to the look and smell of it before you ever try to put them in it.
- Put a favorite blanket or toy inside (if it fits).
- Put food and water near the carrier, you can even put the bowls inside so they can experience being in it without the shock of being in it once and going outside immediately after.
- Put them in the carrier for short periods of time before ever using it for a longer duration. I only suggest 1 or 2 minutes here and there at first.
